Check gastric residue
. Close the nasogastric tube by folding it at the base.
. Remove cap.
. Aspirate gastric residue using a feeding syringe.
. Check amount and texture of gastric residue.
. If the content has a green or red colouration, reject and contact the nurse.
. If the amount of the aspirated liquid exceeds more than half of the last ingested meal, inject the liquid to prevent liquid, electrolytes and enzymes loss. A new assessment should only occur after 1 to 2 hours. If the condition prevails then contact the nurse.
