Ulcers and falls prevention
If your family member is bed or chair ridden, he/she needs to be encouraged to relieve body weight at least every two hours. He/she can do that by: placing hands on armrest, pull to lift body even if just for seconds; or, in the sitting position perform a rocking motion, right-left-right.
If your family member is not able to use the armrests: caregiver must be able to assist in these movements. If you notice any skin reddened area, you should contact a nurse.
Falls prevention
Please make sure that:
The room destined to your family member is easily accessed and all unnecessary furniture is removed.
Flexible shoes with nonslip soles and closed backs are used.
Your family member has all his/her daily objects at hand.
All carpets have been removed or a nonslip platform is applied.
Sofa, couch and chair are firmly placed and include armrests.
If a fall occurs, even with no apparent injuries, you contact a nurse or doctor.
Severe pain complaints or incapacity to move or displayed deformity may signal a fracture.
If there is fracture suspicion and deformity is visible, prevent your family member from making any movements until medical professional help arrives (dial 112).
