Ulcer and fall prevention

If your family member is bedridden or in a wheelchair for most of the time, encourage him/her to lighten body weight every 2 hours. Follow the instructions: 1) with hands resting on the chair armrests, push and lift the body for seconds; 2) or shift body weight from one buttock to the other.

If your family member has a reddish area, you must contact the nurse.

Fall prevention

Make sure that:

1. Your family member should be able to move around easily in his/her location area, hence furniture should be kept as minimal as possible.

2. You are using non-skid hard sole shoes securely fastened.

3. Place regular utensils at your family member’s reach.

4. Carpets and rugs should be removed or have non-slip protection.

5. The sofa and chair must be steady, resistant and with armchairs.

6. If fall occurs regardless of injury, you must report this occurrence to the nurse or physician.

7. The existence of intense pain or inability to move or deformity may be indicative of a fracture.

8. If you suspect a fracture and if there is a deformity, do not try to “fix it”. You should not move your family member. Call the emergency medical service (112).
