Check gastric residue  

  1. Close the nasogastric tube by folding it at the base.
  2. Remove cap.
  3. Aspirate gastric residue using a feeding syringe.
  4. Check amount and texture of gastric residue.
  5. If the amount of the aspirated fluids (digesting food) exceeds more than half of the last ingested meal, inject the fluid again dues avoiding liquid, electrolytes and enzymes loss. You must wait about 1 to 2 hours until reassessment. If the condition prevails then contact the nurse.
  6. If the aspirated content is greenish or reddish, do not reinsert tube and contact the nurse.
