Transferring from bed to chair: the dependent person is not helping
If your family member is not able to stand with aid, then:
- Block the wheels of chair and bed.
- Lift the bed
- Remove the pillow under your family member’s head.
- Assist your family member to move close to the edge of the bed.
- If you have an adjustable bed, lift the head of bed at 90º.
- Cross patient’s arms over his/her chest. Put one arm under the patient’s shoulders and one hand over the patient’s farthest knee. Swing his/her shoulders up and around until the patient is sitting on the side of the bed.
- Lower the bed at chair level. Place the chair at a 30º angle to the bed.
- Cross patient’s arms over his/her chest and place your hands on the patient’s hips and move the patient to the chair at one go.
- If necessary to correct your family member’s body position, place yourself behind the chair, cross your family member’s arms and grab both hands at the same time you pull him/her back.
