Rectal route

Rectal route administration of medication is performed by introducing medication through the anus.

Wear disposable gloves.

Position your family member or help him/her lye down on the left side with the top leg slightly bent.

Ask your family member to breathe slowly and deeply before administering the medicine.

Suppository: gently insert the suppository through the anus pushing it with the index finger into the anal sphincter.

Rectal solutions or liquid enema: remove the cannula cap, insert the cannula into the rectum, press the tube completely and remove the cannula, keeping it tight ensuring that the medicine was completely inserted.

Ask your family member to compress the buttocks and to remain in the same position for five minutes, avoiding the expulsion of the medicine and facilitating its absorption.
