Transferring from bed to chair: with the help of the dependent person
1. Place the chair parallel to the bed and apply brakes.
2. Assist your family member to sit close to the edge of the bed and the nearest possible to the chair. The sitting position movement is eased if the patient is laying on his/her side and lifts the body using both arms.
3. If your family member has some difficulty in moving to a sitting position in bed, place both his/her arms across chest and place your hands in his/her shoulders and legs, helping move to sitting position.
4. To avoid the patient from falling or losing balance, remain in front of him/her while until he/she is in a stable position.
5. Make sure your family member has non-skid hard sole shoes.
6. If you have an adjustable bed, lower it to chair level.
7. Place yourself in front of your family member, knees and hips bent to ensure balance and stability.
8. Support your family member with your arms and knees as needed.
9. Put your arms around your family member’s waist and ask him/her to place hands in your shoulders helping him/her to lift in a single movement.
10. Encourage your family member to remain in that position since it will help improving blood circulation.
11. Assist your family member until the back of his/her knees are close to the chair seat and ask him/her to hold on to the chair armrests before sitting. While sitting your family member keep your knees bent and back straight.
12. Check for correct alignment of your family member’s body
