Feeding through nasogastric tube

  1. Check food temperature by dropping a small amount on your wrist. Ensure that food is neither too hot nor too cold to prevent any internal burns or discomfort.
  2. Fill the syringe and attach it to the nasogastric tube.
  3. Introduce the food slowly, the meal should be given over 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. The recommended amount of food for each meal is 300ml to 400ml maximum, several times a day (or according to health professionals’ instructions). These measures will prevent vomiting, stomach ache and diarrhoea.
  5. At the end of each meal, clean the tube by flushing it with 20 to 30ml of tepid water (this will prevent tube clogging).
  6. Close the tube (bend at the base), remove the syringe plunger and place cap. Repeat this procedure each time the syringe is filled with food.
