Dressing the person
Teach how to dress shirt
- Place shirt over the thigh.
- Put the affected arm through the sleeve of the shirt.
- Use the unaffected hand to pull the shirt by the collar.
- Dress sleeve of the unaffected side.
- Use the unaffected hand to button shirt.
- Use a buttoner (if necessary).
Teach how to dress sweater (or dress)
- Place sweater over thighs, back facing up.
- Put the affected arm through the sleeve using the unaffected hand.
- Put the other arm through the sleeve.
- Pull both sleeves up alternately until they reach the shoulders.
- Put head through the sweater, pushing it down.
Teach how to dress trousers or skirts
- Cross legs, affected leg over unaffected leg.
- Start putting trousers on through the affected leg.
- Uncross legs.
- Put on trousers through the unaffected leg and pull trousers up to the thighs.
- Rise and use the unaffected hand to pull trousers up.
- Sit down to button trousers.
- Use button hook (if necessary).
Teach how to put on socks and shoes
- Sit on a chair and cross legs.
- Open sock with thumb and index and middle fingers of the unaffected hand or use a stock aid.
- Start putting the sock on through the affected foot.
- Place the shoe in front of the foot.
- Insert toe tips into the shoe.
- Insert heel into the shoe, gently pressing the affected knee with the hand.
- A long-handle shoehorn can be used to facilitate putting shoes on.
- Press feet against the floor and make sure shoes are correctly adjusted.
