Oral route (by mouth)
There are different drugs to be administered orally, such as tablets, effervescent tablets, capsules, tablets, syrups, solutions, suspensions, drops, powders and granules.
Some drugs are non-swallowing, such as sublingual (administer under the tongue), or orodispersible, to be dissolved in the mouth.
Powdered, granulated or effervescent tablets must be taken immediately after being dissolved.
Coated drugs such as capsules or tablets must not be crushed or opened.
Oral suspensions (prepared syrups) must be stirred before administration.
Please note that the use of juices, milk or other liquids may affect the absorption of some drugs (always check for information on the medication guide). Alcohol is contraindicated when taking medication.
Provide your family member with sufficient water to enable safe swallowing of medication.
The sitting position or with the help of the head of the bed lifted facilitates taking the medication.
Slightly leaning of the head forward helps to swallow drugs and liquids, preventing them from entering the airways.
Make sure that your family member has taken the medication. After finishing administration of medication check for any pill left on the mouth or hand of your family member.
