Topical route (skin)
There are different drugs to be administered topically, such as ointments, creams, lotions, gel transdermal patches or spay.
Wash the body site before administering medication.
Ointments, creams, lotions and gel must be applied in a thin and uniform layer in the site to be treated, following instructions. If necessary, spread and massage in the direction of hair growth.
When applying the transdermal patch, some aspects must be considered:
- Carefully remove adhesive from its outer packaging and remove the protection, without touching the area containing the medicine;
- Apply the patch to the skin surface that has the least hair. Never apply to oily, burnt, cut, irritated skin or over skin folds;
- Press the edges of the patch for about 10 seconds to promote better adhesion;
- If instructed, alternate patch application sites to prevent skin irritation;
- Never cut the patches unless there is a specific indication;
- Follow the specific instructions regarding the time of application of the transdermal patches;
- Never apply heat to a transdermal patch;
- Before applying a new adhesive, remove the old one.
Sprays must be applied after stirring the container at a distance of 15 to 30 from the skin. If the spray is applied on the chest or face, you should ask your family member to close the eyes or turn face to the opposite side of the spray application site, ensuring that he/she protects both mouth and nose. Spray a thin layer of the medicine evenly over the skin, following the laboratory’s instructions.
