It can be caused by diseases affecting the brain (e.g. Stroke, Alzheimer, Parkinson&#8230;), of changes that affect the structures involved in swallowing, emotional changes or resulting from the ageing process itself (e.g, loss of muscle mass, changes in the mouth and teeth, decreased taste and smell &#8230;).<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"sp-wrap sp-wrap-orange\">\n<div class=\"sp-head\" title=\"Expand\">\nAlert signs and symptoms...\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sp-body folded\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The main signs and symptoms that indicate that there is a change in the ability to swallow are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coughing or choking caused by some type of food or own saliva<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath, increased sputum (and generally audible, gurgling type)<\/li>\n<li>Change in voice<\/li>\n<li>Gastric Reflux (when the food content returns to the oesophagus and mouth)<\/li>\n<li>Extension of the time needed to swallow the food.<\/li>\n<li>Impaired chewing or difficulty in keeping food in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Feeling insecure and anxious at mealtimes<\/li>\n<li>Refuse in feeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your family member has any of these signs or symptoms, do not continue to feed him\/her.\u00a0If the condition prevails, then contact the nurse or physician of your local health unit.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"sp-wrap sp-wrap-orange\">\n<div class=\"sp-head\" title=\"Expand\">\nFood consistency\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sp-body folded\">\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Adjusting the texture and consistency <\/strong><\/span>of solid and liquid food according to your family member&#8217;s situation is essential to prevent complications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPE OF CONSISTENCY<\/strong>\u00a0(Adapted from NDD, 2002 \u2013 National Dysphagia Diet)<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 606px; width: 94.0606%;\" width=\"433\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"211\" style=\"width: 48.9583%;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>SOLID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"220\" style=\"width: 51.0417%;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>LIQUID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"211\" style=\"width: 48.9583%;\">SOFT TEXTURE<\/p>\n<p>Food should be naturally soft or cooked or crushed to alter its texture.<\/td>\n<td width=\"220\" style=\"width: 51.0417%;\">NECTAR-LIKE CONSISTENCY<\/p>\n<p>(thickened liquid)<\/p>\n<p>It can be ingested with the help of a straw or directly from the glass.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"211\" style=\"width: 48.9583%;\">GROUND AND MOIST TEXTURE<\/p>\n<p>Foods are finely ground and moistened and easily fork mashable.\u00a0 Pieces\/chumps of food are usually smooth are round shaped.<\/td>\n<td width=\"220\" style=\"width: 51.0417%;\">HONEY-LIKE TEXTURE<\/p>\n<p>It cannot be ingested through a straw.
